What Is A Dental Surgeon?

The dental surgeon is the academic degree conferred on anyone who has completed a doctorate at a dental school. This title should not be confused with that of “Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon” which requires additional postdoctoral studies.

Every dental surgeon who graduated from a dental school accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA) is awarded a DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) or DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree.

By use and custom, the title “dental surgeon” has been simplified to “dentist.” In many countries, the dentist is known as a dentist, about dentistry.

By definition, Dentistry is the science related to the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and surgical or non-surgical treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial areas and the adjacent or associated structures and their impact on the health of the human body.

The dentist or dentist is the doctor who treats and evaluates diseases of the mouth and surrounding areas, including the administration or prescription of medications.

The general dentist is authorized to perform a wide range of procedures for which he feels qualified by his training and experience. Many dentists are still educated to be able to do more advanced treatments. This preparation is not necessarily conducive to a degree of specialty.

The specialist dentist is one who has completed full-time studies in a postdoctoral program at an accredited institution or hospital. The duration of the same varies according to the specialty. The specialist will limit his dental practice to the specific procedures of the hobby.

The specialties recognized by the American Dental Association are:

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery –

It is the area of dentistry that includes the diagnosis and auxiliary surgical treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects, both functional and aesthetic, of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Endodontics –

It is the area of dentistry that includes the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the dental pulp and associated conditions. The dental pulp is related to the nerve of the tooth, so the endodontist is popularly known as the specialist in removing the nerve to the teeth or doing “root canal treatment.”

Pediatric Dentistry –

It is the area of dentistry that includes the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral and dental diseases of children, medically compromised patients with special needs.

Dental Aesthetics

This type of treatment allows us to correct the natural shape of the teeth and also recover their natural color, making your smile more pleasant.

Periodontics –

It is the area of dentistry that includes the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that affect the gum and the bone that supports the teeth.
